The Patriarchate of the West Indies (Latin: Patriarchatus Indiarum Occidentalium, Spanish: Patriarcado de las Indias Occidentales) is a patriarchate of the Catholic Church with titular jurisdiction over the Latin Church in Spanish America. It was established in 1524 and held by the Military Vicar of Spain from the creation of that office in 1705.
Antonio de Rojas Manrique (died 27 June 1527) was a Roman Catholic prelate who served as Patriarch of the West Indies (1524–1527), [1] Bishop of Burgos (1525–1527), [2] Bishop of Palencia (1524–1525), [3] Archbishop of Granada (1507–1524), [4] Bishop of Mallorca (1496–1507), [5] [6] and President of the Council of Castile (1519–1524).
In 2006, Benedict XVI renounced the title of "Patriarch of the West" (Patriarcha Occidentis). [1] In 2024, Pope Francis reinstated the title of "Patriarch of the West" (Patriarcha Occidentis), reversing the decision by the previous Pope Benedict XVI; the title reinstatement was meant to bring closer ties to the other Patriarchs in the Eastern Orthodox faith.
[3] [5] On 8 Oct 1546, he was appointed during the papacy of Pope Paul III as Patriarch of West Indies and Apostolic Administrator of Sigüenza. On 10 Apr 1679, he was appointed during the papacy of Pope Innocent XI as Titular Archbishop of Tyrus and on 8 May 1679, named Patriarch of West Indies.
