Towns County is an outlier in Presidential politics in Georgia. Lifelong Georgian Jimmy Carter was the last Democrat to carry the county; the last one to get over 40% of the vote was Bill Clinton in 1992 , but George H. W. Bush won a plurality, unlike in many other counties where Clinton was the only candidate to come in over 40%.

Hiawassee is the county seat of Towns County, Georgia, United States. [5] The population was 981 at the 2020 census . [ 3 ] Its name is derived from the Cherokee —or perhaps Creek—word Ayuhwasi , which means meadow , [ 6 ] (A variant spelling, "Hiwassee," is used for the local river and some other Appalachian place names.)
The Towns County Jail, also known as Old Towns County Jail, in Hiawassee, Georgia was built in 1935-36 by the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and modified in 1981.
