In 1960, JBL launched a smaller and less elaborate 3-way sideboard speaker, measuring 73.7 × 30 × 22.5 inches (187 × 76 × 57 cm), named the "C45 Metregon". [8] Self powered Paragons and Metregons employing the JBL SE-408S stereo amplifier were optional. A miniature version, the C46 Minigon was also available in the early 1960s. [5] [9]
Some of the first powered loudspeakers were JBL monitor speakers. With the addition of the SE401 Stereo Energizer, introduced in 1964, any pair of monitor speakers could be converted to self-powered operation with the second speaker powered by the first. [8] The first studio monitor with an active crossover was the OY invented 1967 by Klein-Hummel.
The JBL L-100 and 4310 control monitors were popular home speakers. In the late 1970s, the new L-series designs L15, L26, L46, L56, L86, L96, L112, L150, and later the L150A and flagship L250 were introduced with improved crossovers, ceramic magnet woofers, updated midrange drivers, and aluminum-deposition phenolic resin tweeters.
