The Gran Vía (Spanish: [ˈɡɾam ˈbi.a], Great Way) is a street in central Madrid, Spain.It leads from Calle de Alcalá, close to Plaza de Cibeles, to Plaza de España.The street, sometimes referred to as the "Spanish Broadway", is one of the city's most important shopping areas, with a large number of hotels and large movie theatres.
In November 2006, its height surpassed that of the Gran Hotel Bali, thus making it the tallest building in Spain, although it retained that title only for a short time (see above). The structure was topped out on March 19, 2007 and that evening, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón , mayor of Madrid, attended a firework display to commemorate the event.
