The Baluarte de San Andres is a bastion in Intramuros, which is a part of the Spanish colonial fortification in the historic Walled City.It was built in 1603 to protect the Puerto Real and the southeastern part of Intramuros.

The baluarte also serves as a communication tower during world war II. Before the watchtower stands in disarray, vertically cut in two because of eroded base and foundation. Its two halves stand with concrete post supports on its sides. Recently the tower was totally split in half after it was hit by big waves and strong winds spawned by a typhoon.
The Baluarte Zoo was established by local politician and businessman, Chavit Singson. Initially it was only a rest house for Singson. The site was already known as Baluarte prior to Singson's arrival, which came from the Spanish term for "stronghold" or "fortress".
