Universitas used to be a white suburb of the city of Bloemfontein during the Apartheid era. Today, the racial composition is mixed, and a significant number of the family homes in the suburb have been adapted to serve as communal student accommodation, due to the favourable location near the campuses of the Free State University as well as the Central University of Technology.
Having occupied premises in the Egyptian Building on Hiddingh Campus and later in the P. D. Hahn Building on Upper Campus, [4] the law faculty moved to its own building at the end of 1987. [3] The Wilfred and Jules Kramer Law Building, named after two major benefactors of the faculty, is located on UCT's Middle Campus in Rondebosch, Cape Town.
The university's Bloemfontein Campus is near the city centre. The university also has three campuses. Two are situated in Bloemfontein, referred to as the Bloemfontein Campus and the South Campus, and the other in the former homeland QwaQwa that was, until 2003, part of the University of the North.
