The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences traces its origins to 1963, when it opened as Dar es Salaam Medical School. The school became the faculty of medicine of the University of Dar es Salaam, in 1968. In 1976, the Faculty of Medicine was incorporated into Muhimbili Hospital to form the Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC). [3]

It is the national referral hospital as well as academic and research facility for the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. The Radiotherapy Unit of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Dar es Salaam was shifted from Muhimbili Medical Centre to the Ocean Road Hospital. [ 1 ] In June 1996, Ocean Road Hospital was made an independent autonomous institute directly under the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and its name changed to Ocean Road Cancer Institute.

Currently, Dow International Medical College admits up to 150 M.B.B.S. students per year. DIMC follows the semester system as per the directives of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.
