Originally a "rather tough beer bar," [1] the Palomino, located at 6907 Lankershim Boulevard, was founded by Western swing bandleader Hank Penny and his business partner Amand Gautier, had originally opened the club around 1949-50 as the Palomino. Penny staged "jazz nights" there where West Coast jazz musicians could come to jam.
Lankershim Boulevard was named after Isaac Lankershim, one of the area's founding families, and is one of the oldest streets in what is now North Hollywood. The boulevard was a major thoroughfare for the town of Toluca (which was renamed Lankershim in 1896 and North Hollywood in 1927), connecting it to Los Angeles by way of the Cahuenga Pass.
The Lankershim branch of the Los Angeles Co. Free Library was established November 1914 and located at the "newspaper office." [7] The Lankershim branch was located at 11228 Margate Avenue c. 1921. [8] The Lankershim branch officially joined LAPL in February 1924, [9] and was renamed in 1927 and became the Sidney Lanier branch. [10]
In October 1887, J.B. Lankershim and eight other developers organized the Lankershim Ranch Land and Water Company, purchasing 12,000 acres (49 km 2) north of the Cahuenga Pass from the Lankershim Farming and Milling Company. [3] Lankershim established a townsite which the residents named Toluca along the old road from Cahuenga Pass to San Fernando.
The building was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1980 [3] and it was refurbished in 1990, [1] after which it became the Lankershim Art Center, a gallery and theater space that features 493 square feet (45.8 m 2) of gallery/performance space, a 367 square feet (34.1 m 2) dance floor, and a 364 square feet (33.8 m 2) 44 ...

Hotel Lankershim was designed by Robert Brown Young for James Boon Lankershim, whom the building was named after. [3] Construction started in 1902 and was completed in 1905. Prior to construction, the land was the site of a vineyard owned by Judge Wilson Hugh Gray. [4]
