George Robert Carruthers (October 1, 1939 – December 26, 2020) [1] [2] was an American space physicist and engineer. Carruthers perfected a compact and very powerful ultraviolet camera/spectrograph for NASA to use when it launched Apollo 16 in 1972.

Cameron Carruthers was shot and killed as he lunged at two Chatham police officers called to a house break-in near Chatham's Public General Hospital in the middle of the night. He was stabbing himself with a kitchen knife when police arrived at the house. Carruthers had broken into the home shortly after he walked out of the PGH psychiatric ward.

He was the son of Catholic parents, Andrew Carruthers and his wife Lucy Rigg; [1] Bishop Andrew Carruthers was his brother. He was born in New Abbey in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright. [2] Fr. Carruthers was educated in the Scottish College, Douai, and on his return to Scotland was ordained priest and appointed to the charge of Glenlivet.
As a television consultant, Carruthers guided the Nixon, Ford, [4] [5] Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations on effective use of the media. [6] [7] [8] In the 1990s, he produced specials for The Family Channel, called Marry Me, as well as a short-lived game show for ESPN, Designated Hitter. [9] He suffered a stroke on set in 1996.
