Banding is a medical procedure which uses elastic bands for constriction. Banding may be used to tie off blood vessels in order to stop bleeding, as in the treatment of bleeding esophageal varices. [1] The band restricts blood flow to the ligated tissue, so that it eventually dies and sloughs away from the supporting tissue.
Esophageal varices seven days after banding, showing ulceration at the site of banding. The upper two thirds of the esophagus are drained via the esophageal veins, which carry deoxygenated blood from the esophagus to the azygos vein, which in turn drains directly into the superior vena cava. These veins have no part in the development of ...
It is a temporary measure: ulceration and rupture of the esophagus and stomach are recognized complications. [4] [5] A related device with a larger gastric balloon capacity (about 500 ml), the Linton–Nachlas tube, is used for bleeding gastric varices. It does not have an esophageal balloon.
Nasogastric intubation is a medical process involving the insertion of a plastic tube (nasogastric tube or NG tube) through the nose, down the esophagus, and down into the stomach. Orogastric intubation is a similar process involving the insertion of a plastic tube (orogastric tube) through the mouth. [1] Abraham Louis Levin invented the NG tube.
Megaesophagus, also known as esophageal dilatation, is a disorder of the esophagus in humans and other mammals, whereby the esophagus becomes abnormally enlarged. Megaesophagus may be caused by any disease which causes the muscles of the esophagus to fail to properly propel food and liquid from the mouth into the stomach (that is, a failure of ...
Palliative care: Stents help patients with advanced esophageal cancer by relieving symptoms and improving the quality of life. Alternative to surgery: For older and less healthy patients, an esophageal stent is a viable alternative to surgery, Cons of Esophageal Stent. There are also several potential drawbacks to an esophageal stent procedure:
The prevalence of esophageal inlet patch is between 1% and 12%. [1] Esophageal inlet patches are associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. [3] Although reports are conflicting, some studies have found an association between esophageal inlet patches and Barrett's esophagus. [4]
Diffuse esophageal spasm (DES), also known as distal esophageal spasm, is a condition characterized by uncoordinated contractions of the esophagus, which may cause difficulty swallowing or regurgitation. In some cases, it may cause symptoms such as chest pain, similar to heart disease. In many cases, the cause of DES remains unknown.
