Norway also has a number of university colleges, that are traditionally focused on vocational programs such as nursing or teacher education. Several of these colleges have received university status in recent years, and are referred to as "new universities," in contrast to the "old universities."
The 23 university colleges in Norway are responsible for regional education of primarily bachelor level education within the fields of nursing, teaching, business management, engineering and information technology, though most colleges also offer a number of other academic degrees as well.
Narvik University College merged with the University of Tromsø (Norwegian: UiT - Norges arktiske universitet or UiT) from 1 January 2016 and is now named UiT - The Arctic University of Norway, campus Narvik. It has approximately 2000 students and 220 employees.
