Darjeeling tea is a tea made from Camellia sinensis var. sinensis that is grown and processed in Darjeeling district or Kalimpong district in West Bengal, India. Since 2004, the term Darjeeling tea has been a registered geographical indication referring to products produced on certain estates within Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

Lopchu Tea Estate is located north-east of Darjeeling, mid-way between Darjeeling and Kalimpong, and close to Sikkim. The nearest Darjeeling tea estate is Glenburn Tea Estate, separated by a hill. Takdah is also close-by. [1] Located at a height of 4,800 feet (1,500 m) nestles in a glen overlooking the majestic Kangchenjunga peak. [5]
Soom Tea Garden is located 18 km from Darjeeling. It is bounded by North Tukvar Tea Estate in the north, Phoobsering Tea Estate in the east and Singtam Tea Garden in the south. [1] The planted area of the tea garden is 237 hectares (590 acres) at a height of 5,300 feet (1,600 m). [1]
It was one of the first few to be awarded fair trade certifications. In 1988 it was the first garden to be awarded/ certified as the fully organic tea garden. [3] [7] Makaibari produces around one lakh kg tea annually. Darjeeling Tea is commanding an average price ranging from Rs. 970–1,050 per kg. Makaibari tea fetches around Rs. 3,000 per kg.
The garden was planted by Dr. Charles Graham in 1885. The Goodricke Group took over the garden in 1984. [2] [3]The tea estate was earlier named Kumseri. There was a building named “Bank Ghar’’, which had the look of a castle and from that building, the place became Castleton.
It is on National Highway 110 linking Siliguri with Darjeeling. [2]Other tea estates in the area are: Jungpana, Sivitar and Giddapahar. [1]Goomtee Tea Estate is spread over 110 hectares (270 acres), out of a total area of 225 hectares (560 acres) at an altitude ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 feet (910 to 1,830 m).
