The South Fork Kern River is the heart of the preserve and the South Fork Valley. The river begins at elevation 10,400 feet (3,200 m) in the Inyo National Forest at Mulkey Meadows, named after Cyrus Mulkey, sheriff of Inyo County, California from 1871 to 1874. [ 15 ]
The South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club was a Pennsylvania corporation that operated an exclusive and secretive retreat at a mountain lake near South Fork, Pennsylvania. Its members were more than 50 extremely wealthy industrialists and their families. Most were based in Pittsburgh, the center of steel and related industries.

South Fork began in 1913. By 1923 there were three grain elevators, a lumber yard, cafe, blacksmith, pool hall, feed mill, and general store. A fire in 1928, the depression, and better roads started South Fork on a decline. The last grain elevator closed in 1974 and moved to a farm south of Dollard. [citation needed]

South Fork State Recreation Area is a state park unit of the state of Nevada covering nearly four thousand acres, located five miles (8.0 km) due south of Elko. [4] The park comprises the 1,650-acre (670 ha) South Fork Reservoir [ 5 ] and surrounding marsh, meadowlands, and hills.
