Enrico Caruso (/ k ə ˈ r uː z oʊ /, [1] US also / k ə ˈ r uː s oʊ /, [2] [3] [4] Italian: [enˈriːko kaˈruːzo]; 25 February 1873 – 2 August 1921) was an Italian operatic first lyric tenor then dramatic tenor.
Dorothy Caruso wrote two biographies of her husband: Wings Of Song: The Story Of Caruso published in 1928, and Enrico Caruso: His Life and Death published in 1945. The latter book was a bestseller and the basis for the screenplay of the 1951 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture The Great Caruso, starring Mario Lanza in the title role.
Caruso directed the film Redeeming Love, based on Francine Rivers' 1991 novel of the same name, after "he fell in love with the characters and the story when his wife introduced him to the novel". The film was set for a spring 2021 release, [ 14 ] but was rescheduled to early 2022.
Caruso did suffer a throat or mouth hemorrhage during a Met performance of L'elisir d'amore at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on December 11, 1920, causing the performance to be cancelled.
