Manipur had a population of 2,855,794 at the 2011 census. [94] Of this total, 57.2% lived in the valley districts and the remaining 42.8% in the hill districts. The valley (plain) is mainly inhabited by the Meitei speaking population (native Manipuri speakers).

The district occupies the larger part of the eastern half of the Manipur Valley. The shape of the district is an irregular triangle with its base facing north. It lies between 23° 45' – 24° 45' North latitudes and 93° 45' – 94° 15' East longitudes. Its average elevation is about 790 m above the sea level.
The district headquarters is located at Kamjong. It shares a long international border with Myanmar. The district is bounded by Myanmar in the east, Kangpokpi district in the West, Ukhrul district in the north and Tengnoupal district in the south. The terrain of the district is hilly with varying heights of 913 m to 3114 m (MSL).
In 1969, Manipur was divided into five districts, with Mao and Sadar Hills becoming one of them. It was also called the "Manipur North" district, with a headquarters at Karong. It had three subdivisions: Mao West, Mao East and Sadar Hills. [7] In 1976, the district headquarters was shifted to the town of Senapati. [8]
