The Kansas City Roos men's basketball team represents the University of Missouri–Kansas City in Kansas City, Missouri. Starting off in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) , the Roos moved to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level in 1987 as an independent.
While its previous conference, the WAC, used "UMKC", its current conference, the Summit League, uses "Kansas City". As part of the 2019 rebranding, the program is now known as Kansas City Athletics. Teams will be known as the Kansas City Roos, with "Roos" having long been used as a short form for the historic nickname of Kangaroos. [4]
