Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (SNVMC) is a 183-bed, not-for-profit community hospital serving Prince William County and its surrounding communities. Potomac Hospital, an independent, non-profit community hospital, merged with Sentara Healthcare in December 2009 and is now known as Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (from April 16, 2012).
The original hospital was founded in 1889 in Richmond, Virginia with mission to rendering medical services to all, regardless of their ability to pay. [2] From 1892 to 1965, the hospital was housed in the William H. Grant House. [3] Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Hospital provides services from multiple in-patient locations.
The hospital moved to a new location in 1896 and was renamed Norfolk Protestant Hospital in 1898. The hospital moved again in 1903 and witnessed a fire in 1906, though there were no deaths. Norfolk Protestant was renamed Norfolk General in the 1930s and the first open-heart surgery in Virginia was performed there in 1967.
