The Best of Generation X is a compilation album of English punk rock band Generation X. [4]It was released by Chrysalis Records in 1985 in response to the international success that the band's frontman Billy Idol had recently achieved, as well as the media interest generated by bassist Tony James' then current project, Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
Generation X was the first band to play at the venue. [4] [18] Soon after formation Generation X abandoned playing cover versions in its live performances around London, and began writing its own material, with Idol writing music around James' lyrical song constructions. [19]
The list differs from the 2004 version, with 26 songs added, all of which are songs from the 2000s except "Juicy" by The Notorious B.I.G., released in 1994. The top 25 remained unchanged, but many songs down the list were given different rankings as a result of the inclusion of new songs, causing consecutive shifts among the songs listed in 2004.
“Vienna” joins songs like “Uptown Girl” and “Piano Man” as one of Billy Joel’s most streamed tracks. Young women in particular seem to be behind its slow-burn resurgence.
The song, recognized as "the best-selling single of all time", was released before the pop/rock singles-chart era and "was listed as the world's best-selling single in the first-ever Guinness Book of Records (published in 1955) and—remarkably—still retains the title more than 50 years later".
