The lake and the area around it are known for game hunting, and for the Tustumena 200 Sled Dog Race. Most of the land surrounding the lake is in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. This lake has a reputation for being very dangerous to small boats due to the high winds that regularly blow off of Tustumena Glacier.

The lake is surrounded by Johnson Lake State Recreation Area, which consists of 332 wooded acres (134 ha) with a large campground, picnic areas, and access to the Tustumena Lake road, which ends at the Slackwater boat launch on the river with a small, free campground.
M/V Tustumena is a mainline ferry vessel for the Alaska Marine Highway System. [ 1 ] Tustumena was constructed in 1963 by Christy Corporation in Sturgeon Bay , Wisconsin [ 2 ] and refurbished in 1969 in San Francisco .

Lamoine State Park is a public recreation area occupying 55 acres (22 ha) on the shore of Frenchman's Bay in the town of Lamoine, Maine. [1] The state park offers broad views of the mountains on Mount Desert Island , the narrow Eastern Bay portion of Frenchman Bay , and Lamoine's working waterfront. [ 3 ]
