The lake and the area around it are known for game hunting, and for the Tustumena 200 Sled Dog Race. Most of the land surrounding the lake is in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. This lake has a reputation for being very dangerous to small boats due to the high winds that regularly blow off of Tustumena Glacier.

Lamoine State Park is a public recreation area occupying 55 acres (22 ha) on the shore of Frenchman's Bay in the town of Lamoine, Maine. [1] The state park offers broad views of the mountains on Mount Desert Island , the narrow Eastern Bay portion of Frenchman Bay , and Lamoine's working waterfront. [ 3 ]
The lake is surrounded by Johnson Lake State Recreation Area, which consists of 332 wooded acres (134 ha) with a large campground, picnic areas, and access to the Tustumena Lake road, which ends at the Slackwater boat launch on the river with a small, free campground.
Other less-developed campgrounds and campsites are accessible from the Sterling Highway, Skilak Loop Road, Swanson River Road, and Swan Lake Road, the latter of which do not require fees to access. [4] Since 2005 the refuge has offered 16 cabins for public use via a reservation system, with some cabins accessible only via boat. [5]
M/V Tustumena is a mainline ferry vessel for the Alaska Marine Highway System. [ 1 ] Tustumena was constructed in 1963 by Christy Corporation in Sturgeon Bay , Wisconsin [ 2 ] and refurbished in 1969 in San Francisco .
