Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia.As of the 2020 census, the population was 15,709. [1] The county seat and largest city is Louisville. [2] The county was created on February 20, 1796, and named for Thomas Jefferson, the main author of the Declaration of Independence who became the third president of the United States.
It currently houses the Mayor's Office and the Jefferson County Clerk's Office for marriage licensing, delinquent tax filings, and the deeds room. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Construction began in 1836, and both the City of Louisville and Jefferson County governments starting using it in 1842.
The Jefferson County Courthouse in Courthouse Square in Louisville, Georgia was built in 1904. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. [ 1 ] It is also a contributing property to the Louisville Commercial Historic District .
When it is signed by all parties, the minister must return it to the courts within 30 days after the marriage. A copy of the completed certificate will be sent to the couple when finished.
