The Sunbeam Alpine is a two-seater sports roadster/drophead coupé that was produced by the Rootes Group from 1953 to 1955, and then 1959 to 1968. The name was then used on a two-door fastback coupé from 1969 to 1975.
The Mark I was unavailable in the UK until March 1965 when it entered the market priced at £1446. [48] It was also sold in South Africa for R3350, badged as the Sunbeam Alpine 260. [49] A chrome strip along the sides was a quick way to distinguish the Tiger from the Alpine.
During the 1960s, Sunbeam's Alpine convertible was moderately successful in the US market. Rootes considered that the Alpine's sales would be improved with a more powerful model. As a result, in 1964 they introduced the Tiger, a V8 derivative powered by a 260 cu in (4,261 cm 3) Ford V8 engine.
The Sunbeam Alpine Fastback, introduced in October 1969, was essentially a Rapier with a simplified specification, developed to fill a gap in the Arrow range above the Singer Vogue. It used the same 1,725 cc (105.3 cu in) engine as the Hillman Hunter which, fitted with a single Stromberg 150CD carburettor, developed 74 hp (55 kW) at 5500 rpm.
Later sold as a convertible it displayed the Sunbeam-Talbot signature rear side-window on its first hardtop version. In 1967 it was replaced by a two-door fastback version of the Hillman Hunter which stayed in production until 1976. Sunbeam Alpine 1.5 Litre
