Introduces resources and allows requests for individual URIs (still all typically POST) for separate actions instead of exposing one universal endpoint (API). The API resources are still generalized but it is possible to identify the scope of each one. Level One design is not RESTful, yet it is organizing the API in the direction of becoming one.
Instead, the client is given a set of entry points and the API is discovered dynamically through interaction with these endpoints. HATEOAS was introduced in Roy Fielding's doctoral thesis Architectural Styles and the Design of Network-based Software Architectures. HATEOAS is one of the key elements distinguishing REST from RPC mechanisms. [3]
An example of a popular web API is the Astronomy Picture of the Day API operated by the American space agency NASA. It is a server-side API used to retrieve photographs of space or other images of interest to astronomers, and metadata about the images. According to the API documentation, [15] the API has one endpoint:
The RESTful Service Description Language (RSDL) is a machine- and human-readable XML description of HTTP-based web applications (typically REST web services). [1]The language (defined by Michael Pasternak during his work on oVirt RESTful API) allows documenting the model of the resource(s) provided by a service, the relationships between them, and operations and the parameters that must be ...
A user-agent makes an HTTP request to a REST API through an entry point URL. All subsequent requests the user-agent may make are discovered inside the response to each request. The media types used for these representations, and the link relations they may contain, are part of the API. The client transitions through application states by ...
REST (Representational State Transfer) is a software architectural style that was created to guide the design and development of the architecture for the World Wide Web. REST defines a set of constraints for how the architecture of a distributed, Internet-scale hypermedia system, such as the Web, should behave.
The term "endpoint interface" is more specific about "how to implement the endpoint", for example by an OpenAPI specification or by WSDL specification. Typical endpoints can be expressed by URI Templates. In Open API terms the endpoints are resources that the API exposes.
The client can then use SOAP to actually call one of the operations listed in the WSDL file, using for example XML over HTTP. The current version of the specification is 2.0; version 1.1 has not been endorsed by the W3C but version 2.0 is a W3C recommendation. [1] WSDL 1.2 was renamed WSDL 2.0 because of its substantial differences from WSDL 1.1.
