Aquilegia coerulea is a herbaceous plant with flowering stems that may be 15–80 centimeters (6–31 in) when fully grown. [3] Its leaves are on stems that are always shorter than the flowering stems, just 9–37 cm (4–15 in) and are compound leaves that usually have three leaflets on three components (), but occasionally may be simpler with just three leaflets or more complex ().
