The University of Oxford has 36 colleges, three societies, and four permanent private halls (PPHs) of religious foundation. [1] The colleges and PPHs are autonomous self-governing corporations within the university. These colleges are not only houses of residence, but have substantial responsibility for teaching undergraduate students.
Most colleges also run their own access schemes and initiatives. The Oxford Admissions Study was a research project set up to investigate access issues, in which data were collected on 2,000 students who applied to the university in 2002, including exam results from the universities they went on to attend. To apply to university, students must submit a single application via UCAS's online Apply service. St Catherine's College (commonly known as "St Catz" or "Catz") was established in 1963 and is one of the largest of the Oxford colleges, with about 450 undergraduates and 160 postgraduates. It grew out of the Delegacy of Non-Collegiate Students, founded in 1868 to offer university education at Oxford without the costs of college membership.

Oriel College [6] (/ ˈ ɔː r i əl /) is a constituent college of the University of Oxford in Oxford, England. [7] Located in Oriel Square , the college has the distinction of being the oldest royal foundation in Oxford (a title formerly claimed by University College , whose claim of being founded by King Alfred is no longer promoted).
