Microtia — A congenital defect characterized by either the severe underdevelopment or the absence of the auricle. At one end of the spectrum is an auricle slightly smaller than normal, but of normal appearance, and at the other end of the spectrum is anotia, the absence of the auricle.

Atresia, microtia, otitis media and other outer/middle ear abnormalities, as well as infants with sensorineural hearing loss, will require the use of bone-conduction ABR testing. Infants who have a considerable amount of amniotic fluid in their middle ear space may need to be tested with BCABR.
Freudenthal initially described these species in the genus Microtia in 1976 [1] (with reference to Microtus, a vole with similar teeth), but later the same scholar renamed the genus to Mikrotia in 2006, [2] since the name Microtia was already preoccupied by a butterfly genus named in 1864.
