In August 1998, General Motors released the GMT800 generation of full-size pickups for the 1999 model year as the replacement for the fourth-generation C/K trucks introduced for 1988. The long-running C/K nomenclature was retired by Chevrolet in favor of a singular Chevrolet Silverado nameplate (as GMC had done in 1988 with the GMC Sierra).
The 6.6 L Duramax turbo-diesel was introduced with the 2500HD and 3500 models that debuted for 2001. The GMT800 1500 Chevrolet Silverado was named the MotorTrend Truck of the Year for 1999, the 2500 HD was awarded Truck of the Year for 2001, and the Chevrolet Avalanche was the Truck of the Year for 2002. Starting in 2009, it was also available in the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, as the L9H, with power ratings of 403 hp (301 kW) and 417 lb⋅ft (565 N⋅m). Engines built prior to April 1, 2006, contained AFM hardware; however, the mode was not enabled in the PCM, and thus the system was not functional.
The Chevrolet Silverado EV is a battery electric full-size pickup truck, to go on sale in Fall 2023 as part of the 2024 model year. Although it uses the Silverado nameplate, it shares few structural traits with the Silverado line, and is instead based on the electric platform used by the GMC Hummer EV.
The 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST now has access to a crab-walk mode the brand calls "Sidewinder." The mode allows all four wheels to turn in the same direction, letting the car drive diagonally.
An updated 4L60E, the 4L65E (RPO M32), was phased in the 2001 model year when coupled behind the 6.0 Vortec. Five-pinion front and rear planetaries, along with an additional 3/4 clutch allowing 7 clutches in the input housing and induction hardened input shaft assembly, were improved to withstand up to 380 ft⋅lb (520 N⋅m) of torque.
