Founded by brothers, Duke and Stanley Goldberg, the first Rite Rug store was opened on the corner of Cherry and High Streets in Columbus, Ohio, in 1934. They primarily sold carpet flooring and rugs. In the 1960s, Rite Rug began expanding, opening a second store on E. Main Street and then a third store on Morse Road in Columbus.
The business was founded in 1888 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, by Godfrey Hirst, an English immigrant from Meltham, West Yorkshire, England. His Excelsior Mill, on the north bank of the Barwon River, manufactured various wool textiles until it was sold in the 1966, continuing in operation as Godfrey Hirst Carpets. [2]
In 1956, Mohawk Carpet Mills merged with Alexander Smith, Inc. to become Mohasco Corporation, a company large enough to appear on the first Fortune 500 rankings. Mohasco faced competition from new tufted carpet operations in Georgia, which used synthetic fibers such as nylon and polyester rather than the traditional wool used in woven carpets.
