"Ambri" (Punjabi: امبڑی) (also commonly known as "Mother") is a Punjabi language narrative poem by Anwar Masood. It was inspired by a real event that happened in 1950, in which teacher Anwar Masood himself had an incident in his class, when one of his students beat his mother to almost death, while he was appointed as a schoolmaster in the village near Kunjah. Nawab Mirza Khan Daagh Dehlvi (Urdu: نواب مرزا خان داغ دہلوی, 25 May 1831 – 17 March 1905) was a poet known for his Urdu ghazals. He belonged to the old Delhi school of Urdu poetry. [2] [3] [4] He wrote romantic and sensuous poems and ghazals in simple and chaste Urdu, minimising usage of Persian words.
The poem is addressed to the 18th-century Punjabi poet Waris Shah, who wrote the most popular version of the Punjabi romance tragedy, Heer Ranjha. [4] It appeals to Waris Shah to arise from his grave, record the Punjab's tragedy and turn over a new page in Punjab's history.
