The Hotel Statler St. Louis was designed by George B. Post & Sons and was built in 1917 as part of the Statler Hotels chain. It was the first air-conditioned hotel in the United States. Statler Hotels was bought by Hilton in 1954, and the hotel became The Statler Hilton in 1958.
In 1952, Hilton gutted and modernized many of the hotel's surviving historic interiors, including the main lobby, dining room and coffee shop, and added a 24-hour drug store/soda fountain. [5] In 1954, Hilton purchased the nationwide Statler Hotels chain. As a result, they owned multiple large hotels in many major cities.
The St. Louis Statler was sold by Hilton in 1968 and renamed The Gateway Hotel. It was closed in 1987, and it underwent a mysterious and oft-litigated arson fire the following year. It was expanded, renovated and reopened from 2000-2002 as the Renaissance St. Louis Grand Hotel, it was renamed the Marriott St. Louis Grand in 2015.
