The Milford, Franklin and Providence Railroad was chartered in 1882 to build from Bellingham Junction to Franklin Junction on the New York and New England Railroad (NY&NE) mainline. [1] It opened in August 1883, allowing through service from Milford to Boston via Franklin. [2] The P&W lease of the Milford and Woonsocket expired that year.

The Squannacook River Rail Trail is a 3.7-mile (6.0 km) rail trail between Townsend and the Bertoxxi Wildlife Management Area. The trail opened in 2020 after the completion of tree clearing, though rails and ties were still in place. In July 2020, the state awarded $100,000 for removing tracks and paving the western third of the trail. [31]

The line from the Boston and Providence Railroad's branch at Dedham, Massachusetts, southwest to Walpole opened on April 23, 1849, and an extension to the Providence and Worcester Railroad in Blackstone opened May 16.
The Upper Charles Trail Extension was proposed in 2022 by the Wellesley-based Solomon Foundation. It would connect the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail's southern terminus in Framingham with the existing Upper Charles River Rail Trail (passing through Sherborn, Holliston, Milford, and Hopkinton), as well as the Bay Circuit Trail.
