St. Scholastica Academy opened on Ridge Boulevard in Chicago in 1907. [7] The Sisters taught girls from grades one through twelve until the 1940s, when it became a high school. The academy enrolled young women from diverse economic, religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds throughout the Chicago metropolitan area .
The nuns were transferred from Pittsburgh to St. Scholastica's Convent on Chicago's north side, but later that same year moved to an old parish building at Ashland and 19th Streets, where they would remain until 1912. Notre Dame College Prep has fielded one of the top-ranked basketball teams in Illinois and several graduates have gone on to successful college basketball and professional careers, including Jim Les and Matt Mooney, who each played in the NBA. St. Joseph was a member of the Chicago Catholic League. The school won the 1998—99 Illinois High School Association boys' basketball championship.
