The problem with too small or too large font sizes in Wikipedia comes from the fact that the new design relies on the font size set for the default font in your browser. Firefox sets this default font size to 16 (Tools/Options/Content tab/Fonts & Colors/Size)
The default font size on Wikipedia is already too small (9 points instead of 12 points), so we don't want to make it even smaller. The biggest usability issue is for elders (and possibly anyone older than 40), normal users with low vision and normal users with a particular resolution, device, and such.
This problem occurs only for Wikipedia in combination with Firefox. All other sites have normal font sizes in Firefox. I tried Opera. In this browser the fonts have normal sizes. I am also using Firefox on Android and IOS. On these devices everything is normal. Problem solved I changed the size for the default font from 10 to 16.
The "new" Windows ClearType font family introduced in Windows Vista has consistent font metrics, but these do not match with the core web fonts listed above, so they need to be scaled when mixed.
