The Government Records Council (GRC) can assist individuals requesting government records by providing guidance, information and resolving denial of access complaints. The most convenient way to obtain information is to consult the GRC's website.
Any person who has been denied access to a government record by a records custodian of a public agency can file a complaint with the Government Records Council (GRC). N.J.S.A. 47:1A-6. What are the duties of the Government Records Council? The GRC has the statutory responsibility to: Establish an informal mediation program to facilitate the resolution of disputes regarding access to government records;
The Government Records Council can provide guidance regarding the accessibility of government records. The GRC can inform you about any past decisions regarding the same or similar records, if any such cases exist.
The Council provides general guidance to the public and records custodians through its web site. Printed versions of web site information are available to the public at no cost through the Council's office.
The Government Records Council consists of five members. There are three (3) public members appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the State Senate and the Commissioner of the Department of Education, as well as the Department of Community Affairs.
