Comet Hubble, formally designated C/1937 P1, is the first and only comet discovered by astronomer Edwin Hubble. The comet was already on its outbound flight when it was first spotted in August 1937 as a magnitude 13.5 object in the constellation Sagittarius. [1] [5] It is the fourth comet discovered in 1937. [6]
The controversy was conclusively settled by Edwin Hubble in the early 1920s using the Mount Wilson observatory 2.5 m (100 in) Hooker telescope. With the light-gathering power of this new telescope, he was able to produce astronomical photographs that resolved the outer parts of some spiral nebulae as collections of individual stars.
The resulting Hubble Deep Field image in 1995 captured several thousand unseen galaxies in one pointing. The bold effort was a landmark demonstration and a defining proof-of-concept that set the stage for future deep field images. In 2002, Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys went even deeper to uncover 10,000 galaxies in a single snapshot.
The first images are a bouquet of roses and an American flag. A mechanical system is used to transmit 50-line images to Washington.
