The power plant is the first power plant of NTPC. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It sources coal from Jayant and Bina mines and water from Rihand Reservoir. The states benefitting from this power plant are Uttar Pradesh , Uttarakhand , Rajasthan , Punjab , Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territories of Delhi , Chandigarh and Jammu and Kashmir .
The project was originally proposed in 1999 but got delayed because Coal India Limited objected to the location of the power plant and wanted NTPC to relocate the power plant as it was coming up on site having 6 billion tonnes of coal underneath it. Coal India Limited withdrew the coal linkage to the plant in 2008.
NTPC was formed in 1988 to acquire and operate the former assets of the Northern Canada Power Commission in the Northwest Territories, including what is now Nunavut. Since 2007, NTPC is organized as a subsidiary of the Northwest Territories Hydro Corporation. 76% of NTPC's electrical generation is in the form of Hydro electricity.
The coal for the power plant is sourced from North Karnpura Coal Fields. Source of water for the power plant is from Tanda Pump Canal on Saryu River. In the year 2000, Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Board (U.P.S.E.B.) transferred Tanda thermal power plant to NTPC Limited against payment overdue.
