Per household property tax burdens in Milwaukee County are lower than Waukesha & Ozaukee Co. We actually have a pretty lean operation. Obviously, a big issue is that the average house is 125K in the city.

Rural areas also don’t have as many non-profits like universities occupying a lot of their most valuable land, but still need roads and sidewalks. The state should provide more to the city, but in Wisconsin, the state government doesn’t want to help Milwaukee - and has reduced the amount of revenue sharing for the city over the years.

Milwaukee isn't allowed to increase their sales tax without it being approved by the state assembly, property taxes are essentially the only thing we have to pay for any service in the city--so they often get increased when we need more money. Sales tax is 5.6%, 5% of that goes to the state, 0.5% to Milwaukee County, and 0.1% to the stadium.
city wide property assessments went up like 12% this year so most people are going see their property taxes go up this year. Since I'm such an above average individual though my assessment went up almost 30% so I got an extra nice present from the city
The amount of money the City gets each year is only a minor increase, just the distribution of who pays it is different. There are some neighborhoods that have become in incredibly high demand and the property tax increases reflect that. My property taxes have barely changed in the past 5 years.

Yeah, I have lived in Riverwest since 1995 and purchased my first property there in 2003, the next in 2006. I watched my property taxes increase anywhere from 30%-75% over the years. They effectively taxed me out of there. I could never understand fully why I was paying more than people pricier suburban areas.
