This is an incomplete list of works by the French modern artist Henri Matisse (31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954). He is admired for his use of color and his fluid, brilliant and original draughtsmanship. He was a Master draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter.
In March 1909, Matisse painted a preliminary version of this work, known as Dance (I). [3] It was a compositional study and uses paler colors and less detail. [4] The painting was highly regarded by the artist who once called it "the overpowering climax of luminosity"; it is also featured in the background of Matisse's Nasturtiums with the Painting "Dance I", (1912).
While Matisse had been baptized a Catholic, he had not practiced the religion for many years. The story of the friendship and collaboration of Matisse and Sister Jacques Marie is related in her 1992 book, Henri Matisse: La Chapelle de Vence (ISBN 2909767000) and in the 2003 documentary Model for Matisse. Paul Matisse is the son of New York gallery owner Pierre Matisse (the youngest son of painter Henri Matisse) and Alexina Sattler. His mother later divorced Pierre and married artist Marcel Duchamp, becoming Alexina "Teeny" Duchamp. Thus Paul is both grandson of Henri Matisse, and the stepson of Marcel Duchamp. [1]
