Southwick Beach State Park is a New York State park that lies along an unusual stretch of sandy beach on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. The park is 464 acres (188 ha) in size with a 3,500 foot (1,100 m) length of beach, and is visited annually by about 100,000 people. [ 1 ]
The park includes 274 campsites, as well as a campground store. Despite its name, swimming is not allowed at the park. [1] The park installed the 18-hole "Shore Winds Disc Golf Course" in 2009, [1] which starts near the back of the park and includes several holes playing along the Lake Ontario shoreline.
The largest parks in New York are the Adirondack Park, at six million acres (24,000 km 2; 9,400 sq mi); and the Catskill Park, at 700,000 acres (2,800 km 2; 1,100 sq mi). Together they comprise the New York Forest Preserve, properties that must be kept "Forever Wild" according to Article 14 of the New York Constitution .
The site was transferred to New York State's ownership in 1938, and was renamed Hamlin Beach State Park. After World War II, the Lake Ontario State Parkway was extended through the park, increasing accessibility. [3] The parking lot was expanded to handle the increase in visitors, and the campgrounds were built.
Chimney Bluffs State Park is a 597-acre (2.42 km 2) state park [2] in the town of Huron in Wayne County, New York. [3] The park is situated on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, east of Sodus Bay. From the park's hiking trails, visitors can view the large clay formations at the water's edge for which the park is named.
Long Point State Park – Thousand Islands is a 23-acre (0.093 km 2) state park located at the northeast tip of Point Peninsula on Lake Ontario's Chaumont Bay.
