Northlake Mall is a two-story modern shopping mall located eight miles (13 km) north of center city Charlotte, North Carolina off Interstate 77 at exit 18, Harris Blvd, and off Interstate 485 at exit 21, also at Harris Blvd. The mall was owned by Starwood Capital Group and is currently managed by Spinoso Real Estate Group.
A strip mall opened behind Sears in June 1970 with a Colonial Stores grocery store (later a Big Star food market, then acquired by Harris Teeter in the 1980s) and the SouthPark Cinemas I & II. The mall did not face any real competition until the two-story Eastland Mall was built about 6 miles (10 km) northeast.
In 1995, the Charlotte Convention Center relocated a few blocks south of its former location. The original Charlotte Convention Center closed shortly after, and was placed for sale. The building was on the market until The Ghazi Company purchased the 3.25-acre (1.32 ha) site in 2004 for $14.5 million. [2]
