Savu (Indonesian: Sawu, also known as Sabu, Havu, and Hawu) is the largest of a group of three islands, situated midway between Sumba and Rote, west of Timor, in Indonesia's eastern province, East Nusa Tenggara.
The Savunese people, also known as orang Sabu or Sawu (Bahasa Indonesia) or dou Hawu (Savunese language), are the people of Savu and smaller neighbouring Raijua in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Savu had little to interest traders from Europe, or neighbouring kingdoms, and it remained largely insular until the late-20th century.
On 29 October 2008 a further regency – Sabu Raijua (53.20) (comprising the Savu Islands group) – was formed from part of the remaining Kupang Regency. On 14 December 2012 yet another regency – Malaka (53.21) – was created out of the southern half of Belu Regency .
The island lies to southwest of Sawu Island in the Sabu Raijua Regency and 30 kilometers from Raijua island. The island is not visited throughout the year except on one annual pilgrimage by the Raijua elders and people per year.
