Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, one of the largest acute hospital campuses in Europe. The board was established following the dissolution of several NHS trusts which provided healthcare services in the Dumfries and Galloway area: Dumfries and Galloway Acute and Maternity Hospitals NHS Trust, Dumfries and Galloway Community Health NHS Trust and Dumfries and Galloway Primary Care NHS Trust, all of which were established in the 1990s and dissolved between 1999 and 2003.
The hospital was commissioned to replace the Garrick and Dalrymple hospitals in Stranraer and is located on the site of part of the Dalrymple hospital, adjacent to the Waverley Medical Centre. [1] It opened on a partial basis in September 2006, [2] with the renal unit opening in April 2007. [3]
