Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park is a 3,000-acre (1,200 ha) public recreation and nature preservation area located twelve miles (19 km) east of Whitehall in Jefferson County, Montana. The state park includes two visitor centers, ten miles of hiking trails, a campground, and its namesake limestone caverns. [2]
Prior to 1980, Montana Power Company owned the land and operated the park as a recreation area. In 1980, the company turned over management of the park to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP). In 1982, it was designated a state recreation area. Subsequently, the land was also turned over to FWP. [5]
Hell Creek Recreation Area is a public recreation area managed by the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana occupying 337 acres (136 ha) on the south side of Fort Peck Lake twenty miles (32 km) due north of the community of Jordan, Montana. [4]
The park offers 30 campsites and a boat ramp. [1] Visitors may access the boat ramp for aquatic activities, and fisherman may fish the waters of Flathead Lake. [8] In 2016, development plans were announced by Montana State Parks for the improvement of a bicycle campground area to feature spots for 10 campsites and bicycle-related amenities.
