The lake was named after the cormorant, a common bird species in the region. [1] In 2015, the lake was discovered to be infested with zebra mussels, which threatens neighboring lakes. Surrounded by city park land and circled by bike and walking trails, it is popular for many outdoor activities.
The lake covers an area of 3,986 acres (16.13 km 2), and reaches a maximum depth of 64 ft (20 m) in the northern portion of the lake. The lake got its name because of its unique and very intricate resemblance to the shape of a pelican. [citation needed]
