BLACK GIRLS ROCK! was founded by celebrity DJ and model Beverly Bond in 2006. The inaugural BLACK GIRLS ROCK!AWARDS ceremony honored rapper MC Lyte and DJ Jazzy Joyce at powerHouse Arena, an art gallery and powerHouse Books location in DUMBO, Brooklyn.
Bond is the founder of the organization Black Girls Rock! [7] [8] This started out with a T-shirt imprint in 2006 [1] and grew into a mentorship program for young women promoting self-worth and empowerment. [9] [10] In 2006 Bond also created the Black Girls Rock! Awards. The first ceremony was held in Brooklyn,NY.
In 2009, Res released her second album Black.Girls.Rock! through digital media available on iTunes. The album features tracks originally recorded for her shelved Geffen album. Black.Girls.Rock! is described by Res as "more of a singer/songwriters album than my debut. Great, classic songs!"
