Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (officially the Gerry E. Studds Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary) is an 842-square-mile (636 sq nmi; 2,181 km 2) United States Government-protected national marine sanctuary located at the mouth of Massachusetts Bay between Cape Cod and Cape Ann.
The first records indicate its location as being "on the west shore of Cape Cod Bay, seven miles southeast of Plymouth, Massachusetts." [1] The station opened on October 15, 1874, with Stephen Holmes appointed as its first keeper. At the age of 37, Holmes already had 20 years' experience as a surfman. [1]
The North River is a popular river for kayakers as well as for small boats. There are several locations to load into the water. One at Bridge Street in Norwell, Union Street in Marshfield, Chittenden Lane in Norwell, Driftway Park in Scituate and upriver close towards the end of the North River in Hanover, there is a public boat launch off of Indian Head Drive.
