In reply to Wild Child's post on June 1, 2013. Sorry for the typo and confusion. I meant to type <alt-x>. In other words. type 215B. then hold down the <alt> key; depress and release the 'x' key, then release the <alt> key. Those fractions are unicode characters.

Most of the usual "body text" fonts include these characters: Arial and Arial Unicode MS, Calibri, Cambria, Consolas, Lucida Sans Unicode, Segoe UI, and Times New Roman and some others that aren't supplied by Microsoft. In the Insert > Symbol dialog, for any selected font, make sure the dropdown in the lower right corner says ...
Some fractions (1/4, 1/2, and 3/4) automatically switch to a fraction character when you type them (¼, ½, ¾). But others do not (1/3, 2/3, 1/5, etc.). To switch to a fraction character, click Insert > Symbols > More Symbols. In the Subset drop-down list, click Number Forms and select a fraction. Click Insert > Close.

MS Word’s Symbol library (Insert Symbol More Symbols) holds all of the ASCII and Unicode characters for creating your own fractions on-the-fly. The image above shows the location of the denominators, the fraction slash and most numerators. The ¹, ² and ³ numerators are located much closer to the top of the symbol library.

That symbol means you've turned on Do not disturb. You can disable it by clicking on the internet symbol. Then click on the half moon symbol to disable it. Check your AutoCorrect Options to see the fractions added. Uncheck the Autoformat as you type option for fractions. If you want, run the backup in the utility again. If prompted whether you want to save changes to the global template Normal.dotm when closing Word, say yes. (These formatted entries are stored in the normal template.)
