The light from this tower, which stood thirty-two feet tall and was an open frame at its base but enclosed at the top, was first exhibited on October 30. An elevated walkway, which was 600-feet long and linked the tower to the dwelling on the lighthouse pier, was finished in November.
The piers flanking the channel of the river were extended out further into Lake Michigan in 1868. In 1872 a light was built on the end of the north pier to mark the entrance. In 1906 the original tower was replaced. In 1926 the 4 th Order Fresnel was replaced by a 5 th order.

The Milwaukee Breakwater lighthouse was built in 1926 in the harbor of Milwaukee in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin to mark the entrance to the harbor. One of the last fully enclosed breakwater lighthouses in the Great Lakes, [8][9][10] the structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.
The Milwaukee Pierhead Light was built in 1872 near where the Milwaukee River empties into Lake Michigan. It is one of the typical "red towers" that light the sailors' path on Lake Michigan, as well as the "twin sister" of the Kenosha Lighthouse, located north of Pierhead.
