The Holburne's role as a university museum was established in 1973 through its association with the University of Bath. [30] Though it has also engaged in collaboration with nearby University of Bristol. [31] In 2013 the Holburne Museum and Bath Spa University announced a new partnership to promote their academic and cultural collaboration. [32]
A plan of Sydney Gardens, Bath, as part of the plan of Bath published in 1810. The Sydney Hotel was built within the gardens. It later became the Holburne Museum. The original design for the hotel, prepared by Thomas Baldwin in 1794, was a two-storey building which would serve the pleasure gardens.
The Holburne Museum of Art is situated opposite to Sydney Place, it was originally designed as the Sydney Hotel, and was built by Charles Harcourt Masters in 1795–6. [3] It is within the Sydney Pleasure Gardens which stretch from the road to the Kennet and Avon Canal .

The fifth Baronet was founder of the Holburne Museum of Art, Bath, Somerset. On his death in 1874 the baronetcy became either extinct or dormant. The family seat was Menstrie Castle, Menstrie, Clackmannanshire.
Following the death of his mother in 1829, from 1830 William lived at Cavendish Crescent in Bath with his three unmarried sisters. [4] After his death in 1874, he passed his collections to his last surviving sister Mary Anne Barbara (1802–1882), who led the project to establish the Holburne museum with many of her brother's art collections.
