Kirkwood is an inner-ring western suburb of St. Louis located in St. Louis County, Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 27,540. [ 5 ] Founded in 1853, the city is named after James P. Kirkwood , builder of the Pacific Railroad through that city.
The former Kirkwood School is a handsome building from this period, located on Kirkwood Road NE just north of Bessie Branham Park. Individually nominated to the National Register of Historic Places , the primary building on the property's south side was originally designed by John Francis Downing , son of the noted Atlanta architect W. T. Downing .

The Ferguson Municipal Public Library was founded in June 1930 as a volunteer community library. [4] The Missouri Library Commission contacted Chapter FH of the P.E.O. Sisterhood about starting a public library in Ferguson [4] and the Kirkwood Public Library provided guidance and gifted fifty books. [4]
